Art of Love is Happiness

While rehearsing for an upcoming gig with Dan Clucas, Jeff Schwartz, Alexander Vogel, and Rich West I was reacquainted with The Art of Love is Happiness, an Ornette Coleman composition that may have been my favorite on the In All Languages album. There is a nice version of it below, but you can also come out and see the five of us play it as well as compositions by Steve Lacy, Albert Ayler, Dave Holland, and Thelonius Monk:

How To Actually Make $50,000 a Year As a Musician

How to Really Make $50,000 a Year

  1. Get a church job (3 services a week @ $100/service) = $15,600
  2. Start a teaching studio (12 students @ $50/lesson) = $31,200
  3. Play background music once a month (@ $250/gig) = $3,000
  4. Play in a band twice a month (@ $50/gig) = $1,200

That’s $51k a year. That’s how it’s really done.

This is a great article, and realistic. Certainly, these jobs aren't as glamorous as "rock star", but all of the scenarios listed are do-able by even mid-level musicians.

How do you make money playing music?
